The challenges posed by Alzheimer's disease affect East Central Iowa at a personal, and econimic, and societal level. An estimated 16,000 East Central Iowans currently have Alzheimer's disease. Increasing age is the greatest risk factor for Alzheimer's. One in ten individuals over age 65 and nearly half over 85 are affected. The number of East Central Iowans will continue to grow as our population ages and life expectancy rates sore.

Alzheimer's disease impacts not only the patient, but the family, friends and caregiver of that patient. More than seven out of ten people with the disease live at home, where family and friends provide 75% of their care.
